The foundation conducts one open grant cycle each year. The deadline for applications is December 1. Awards are announced on March 1. Applications are accepted for a wide variety of programs and projects that improve the quality of life throughout Douglas County, Kansas.
The foundation supports activities in the following areas:

Arts and Culture
- Community Development
- Education
- Environment
- Health
- Human Services
- Children and Youth
Grants generally range from $500 to $10,000; median award is $5,000
Grants totaling nearly $146,000 were awarded in 2008
- Proposal must come from a tax-exempt organization
- Proposal must be for work that primarily benefits residents of Douglas County, Kansas
- Organization must conduct business without discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability or national origin
Favored projects are those that:
- Provide a substantial benefit
- Are based on meaningful, specific outcomes
- Build self-sufficiency and help attract additional funds and resources for the participants or organization
- Assist or promote collaboration among nonprofits, so as not to duplicate other efforts
In addition, the foundation is more likely to fund projects that:
- Are clearly and concisely described
- Are based on complete and clear income and expense projections
- Do not require recurring funding
- Reasonably ensure continued support after foundation funding is no longer available
- Are proposed by organizations that demonstrate sound financial practices and strong staff and volunteer support
Generally, grants are not awarded for:
- Administrative or general operating expenses
- Marketing plans or projects to increase community awareness of an organization
- Purchase of tickets or tables at special events, memberships, or advertising
- Individuals
- Annual campaigns
- Endowment funds
- Religious purposes
- Lobbying or political activities
- Debt retirement
At the end of the grant period, awardees are required to complete a short report form and attach a financial statement detailing how funds were used.
