Terra Foundation for American Art Offers Exhibition Program Grants: 09/14/09 |

The Terra Foundation supports exhibitions that increase the understanding and enjoyment of American art, and has a particular interest in exhibitions with venues that are outside the United States or in its hometown of Chicago. The foundation also makes grants to support exhibition projects (including related publications) that encompass multi-national collaboration or interpret American art within a global context. In addition, the foundation funds scholarly, small-scale exhibitions that include loans from the Terra Foundation’s collection. Grant funding is available for:
- Exhibitions of American art shown at art and cultural institutions in Chicago. This includes exhibitions organized or hosted by a Chicago institution.
- Exhibitions of American art shown at art and cultural institutions outside the United States. This includes exhibitions organized or hosted by an institution outside the United States.
- Exhibitions of American art organized by U.S.-based art and cultural institutions. The foundation will consider exhibitions that meet at least one of the following criteria:
- at least one Chicago venue or venue outside the United States
- a focused thesis exploring American art within an international context
- result from international collaboration
Other Exhibition Program Initiatives The Terra Foundation also collaborates on and initiates American art exhibitions that include objects from the foundation’s collection and that bring works of art, new scholarship, and international perspectives to audiences around the globe.
The Terra Foundation is especially interested in projects that include one or more of the following:
- Cross-cultural dialogue on American art
- New ways of thinking about American art
- Scholarly interpretation and a contextualized presentation
- Related educational programming
The Terra Foundation currently does not accept proposals for:
- Exhibitions solely comprised of contemporary art (post-1980 to present)
- Exhibitions solely comprised of private or commercial collections
- Online exhibitions Art acquisitions
- Permanent collection installations, except in Chicago or outside of the United States
Eligibility The foundation only accepts proposals from art and cultural institutions with United States 501(c)(3) status or the international equivalent. Grants are not made to individuals.
