Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) now accepts proposals for pilot studies on a monthly basis. Reviews will be conducted 3-4 times annually. The goal of this program is to provide timely funding for innovative ideas to speed up discovery and advance the Foundation’s mission. Preliminary data are not required to successfully compete for an MAF pilot-study grant. Following are the criteria and timelines for submitting a pilot-study proposal:
• Pilot-study grant cycle: Pilot-study proposals are accepted monthly and evaluated 2-3 times annually. The below schedule is approximate, deadlines will be updated on MAF’s website:
- Proposals received by March 31 will be reviewed in April, recipients will be notified in May and funding will be awarded after July 1
- Proposals received by August 31 will be reviewed in September, recipients will be notified in October and funds will be awarded in January 2010
- 2010 calls for pilot studies will be posted when available
• Pilot studies must meet the following criteria:
Budget cannot exceed $10,800 ($10,000 plus 8 percent for indirect costs)
Studies cannot exceed one year
Applicants must submit using MAF’s online form
All investigators are eligible to apply—new investigators are particularly encouraged
An investigator can serve as principal investigator (PI) or co-investigator on only ONE (1) MAF pilot study per year.
You are not eligible to apply for an MAF pilot study if you are a PI on a current MAF study (serving as a co-investigator on a current MAF study or having a pending pre-proposal or full proposal at MAF is acceptable)
You are not eligible to apply as the PI of an MAF pilot study if you currently (at the time of submitting the application) have extramural funding exceeding $20,000. This does not apply to any co-investigators on the study. A pending pre-proposal or full proposal at or exceeding this budget with MAF or another funding agency is acceptable.
The PI on an MAF pilot study does not need to have full-time faculty status at his or her institution. Residents are eligible to apply for this award.
