Why do you stop giving to a non-profit you once
supported?
A friend and I were discussing this subject recently, and she told me she quit giving to a group because it didn't appear to support the cause it wanted her to support. The example she told me about was an organization that's all about supporting America. When she donated and got her "gift" it turned out to be a t-shirt, with a label that read "Made in China." She said that in her eyes that was about like an animal rescue group sending her a keychain made of fur. Another friend said she quit sending money to any organization that gives "gifts" for donations - especially if they send the gift first and want you to send money out of guilt for taking their gift. If you study fundraising methods, you'll learn that instilling guilt is one of the major ways that large organizations use to get donors to give. Sometimes their offerings are small - as in a notepad or a sheet of return address labels. But other times they're larger. Just last week I received a really cute "cooler" lunch bag from an animal rescue organization. You know that between the "gift" and the postage, that organization spent a few dollars trying to make me feel guilty enough to send them more than the value of the "gift." Over the years I've received tote bags, t-shirts, gift wrap, and many other such gifts from this group. I personally don't care for that tactic, so I don't send money. But they keep sending "gifts." If you work for a non-profit, think about what makes you give or not give. Then ask yourself if your group is using any of the methods that make you stop giving.
